Still on for Wednesday

Hey folks,
I had a procedure today keeping me from my appointed rounds at the gym tomorrow, but not to worry.
Coach John Guessford kindly offered his services to the class and no one will miss a beat.  Austen will certainly be there as well to benefit from the wisdom coach John has to impart.  He was an instrumental part of the team that took Richmond Dalphone to Nationals as a Heavyweight, and in a neat demonstration of God's divine touch, we are from the same bloodline of Boxers out of the Hillcrest Heights boxing gym in Maryland.
I may be there to drop off Austen and hope to see you all there.  Please give coach John the same respect and dedication to him, the work, and each other that we do every week.

5-12-09 Training

Hey Folks,
See you tomorrow for training.  Everyone please bring a ridgid water bottle---the ones at the gym are flimsy and we can not continue to spill water on the ring.  I just found out today that there is a show in Pensacola on 6/20 so I will be making every effort to get registered so we might participate.

Wednesday Boxing

Hey Everyone,
Hope everybody had a good week.  Tomorrow Nick will get the opportunity to spar austen and possibly Davis, and Cody should be able to spar Kenny, a 140 lb boxer.  For these sessions I will be sure to be on top of the action due to the weight differences.  For Cody and Austen it's important to know that if  you are being punched without punching back I will halt the action for a standing 8 count AT LEAST.
My daughter Tiffany will be there to assist me by making sure the class is working their drills and bags while I pull individuals out to work mitts, etc.  The boy who came to spar with Austen a couple of weeks ago lost his first bout this past Saturday in Mobile to a 2-0 boxer, but it was a close fight.  Let's train so there are few close fights for us, but we win the ones that are.
     See you tomorrow.

Boxing tomorrow at 6:00

Hey folks,
We are on for tomorrow as per usual.  Nick picked up one of the pairs of bag gloves I am selling, which leaves another pair for someone else.  Train with them and see what you think, the Twins product comes most highly recommended by the Dalphones.
My daughter Tiffany will be helping out tomorrow (and hopefully from now on), and Austen's sparring partner (72 lbs) from the Pensacola Boxing Academy is coming over for some ring work with Austen (54 lbs), and possibly another of our boxers, as he is preparing for a show and needs to spar.
Look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow, have a good night.

Tonight's session

Hey folks, all those who missed sparring last week got a taste tonight---Dillon Kelley went a few rounds with Austen working the jab, and Cody got to beat on coach tonight! Nick also beat on coach, and I know these guys are looking forward to when they have somebody punching back.

We will not spar every session because it's not an efficient or fair method of training for the club. Only 2 can spar at a time, and I have to be there in the ring leaving the other kids without instruction. And it's not so much a way to develop skill, but demonstrate it. Sparring will certainly teach you that the training is necessary and the rules are true, especially if someone is EXPOSING you when you are open. If your being open is being EXPLOITED without correction, sparring becomes no more than FIGHTING. SPARRING is INSTRUCTIVE BOXING. Sparring is the reward for the hard training.

We are striving to have our sparring sessions full of good offense that is better defended, so now that everyone has 'stepped through the ropes', we'll get back our program next week. The boxers should think about the sparring, what they landed, and what landed on them...this will help them focus on the drills next week and see the purpose behind them.

Also, John Guessford is training at the gym when we are, and if he has anything to say to the boxers, make sure they listen. He was one of the coaches that helped Richmond reach the National Golden Glove tournament before he turned professional. This also goes for Richmond, Clark, or Mike 'the mailman'. If these guys see and comment on something, they are being extremely helpful to the boxer and me, and they won't steer you wrong!

Have a good week.

Boxing Tomorrow at 6:00

We had a good time last week sparring...Davis looked strong, Will impressed me very much, Nick had the chance to beat on the coach and did very well, and Austen was over joyed that we have reached the day of sparring!

Those who didn't get the chance last week will get a chance this week, but sparring is not something we can incorporate every session at this point.  As we develop we will be able to work more partner drills that simulate the sparring, but we have to continue to learn and improve so the sparring is most effective when we do.

I purchased some Twins bag gloves thinking they were as billed (i.e. 'training' or sparring gloves) that I am offering at the price I paid, $39.99 (on sale from $79.99).  The twins product comes highly recommended by the Dalphones, so if you do not have gloves of your own yet you can take a look at them Wednesday.  If no one is interested I will return them so I can get some 14 oz. sparring gloves.

See you all tomorrow.
