Tonight's session

Hey folks, all those who missed sparring last week got a taste tonight---Dillon Kelley went a few rounds with Austen working the jab, and Cody got to beat on coach tonight! Nick also beat on coach, and I know these guys are looking forward to when they have somebody punching back.

We will not spar every session because it's not an efficient or fair method of training for the club. Only 2 can spar at a time, and I have to be there in the ring leaving the other kids without instruction. And it's not so much a way to develop skill, but demonstrate it. Sparring will certainly teach you that the training is necessary and the rules are true, especially if someone is EXPOSING you when you are open. If your being open is being EXPLOITED without correction, sparring becomes no more than FIGHTING. SPARRING is INSTRUCTIVE BOXING. Sparring is the reward for the hard training.

We are striving to have our sparring sessions full of good offense that is better defended, so now that everyone has 'stepped through the ropes', we'll get back our program next week. The boxers should think about the sparring, what they landed, and what landed on them...this will help them focus on the drills next week and see the purpose behind them.

Also, John Guessford is training at the gym when we are, and if he has anything to say to the boxers, make sure they listen. He was one of the coaches that helped Richmond reach the National Golden Glove tournament before he turned professional. This also goes for Richmond, Clark, or Mike 'the mailman'. If these guys see and comment on something, they are being extremely helpful to the boxer and me, and they won't steer you wrong!

Have a good week.

A-dub
